NYSTRS Direct Deposit Setup: Form GRE-54 and Your First Pension Payment
Missing the direct deposit deadline is one of the simplest mistakes to make — and one of the most annoying. If NYSTRS does not have your banking information in time, your first payment may be issued as a paper check or delayed to the next payroll cycle. Here is how to avoid that.
What Form GRE-54 Does
Form GRE-54 is the Direct Deposit Authorization Agreement. It tells NYSTRS where to send your monthly pension payments electronically. Without it, your first payment may be issued by paper check or delayed to the next payroll cycle.
The form requires your bank's routing number, your account number, and whether the account is checking or savings. You must also attach a voided check or a bank letter confirming the account details.
The Deadline That Matters
Submit Form GRE-54 so that it reaches NYSTRS by the 10th of your retirement month. If you retire effective July 1 and NYSTRS received your properly completed retirement application at least 30 days before that date, it needs the form by July 10 to set up direct deposit for your first payment on the last business day of July.
If you file your retirement application through the MyNYSTRS portal, you can set up direct deposit as part of the online application workflow — look under Tools > Direct Deposit. If you are filing a paper Form RET-54, mail the GRE-54 at the same time in the same envelope. Do not wait to file them separately.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline
If NYSTRS does not have your banking information in time, the first payment may be issued by paper check or delayed to the next payroll cycle.
Direct deposit kicks in on the following month's payment automatically once NYSTRS processes your GRE-54.

Changing Your Bank Account After Retirement
If you switch banks, close an account, or want to redirect your pension to a different account, you can update your direct deposit at any time through MyNYSTRS. Log in, go to Tools > Direct Deposit, and enter the new banking details.
The effective month depends on when NYSTRS receives and processes the change. Confirm the cutoff with NYSTRS before changing accounts near a payment date.
You can also submit a new paper GRE-54 by mail if you prefer, but the online method processes faster.
Splitting Deposits Across Accounts
NYSTRS deposits your full monthly pension into a single bank account. The system does not support splitting a payment across multiple accounts. If you want to allocate funds to different accounts, set up automatic transfers through your bank after the deposit arrives.
The NYSTRS Retirement Guide includes a filing timeline that shows exactly when each form — RET-54, GRE-54, W-4P — should be submitted relative to your retirement date.
