TRS Illinois Member Information Meeting

TRS offers member information meetings and virtual webinars where counselors cover retirement eligibility, benefit calculations, health insurance options, and the application process. Check trsil.org for the current schedule, format, and registration details. If you're within a few years of retiring, these meetings are one of the better uses of a Saturday morning.

What the Meetings Cover

A typical TRS member information meeting runs through the core retirement mechanics: Tier 1 versus Tier 2 eligibility rules, how your Final Average Salary is calculated, the standard annuity versus the Reversionary Annuity, TRIP and TRAIL health insurance enrollment, and the retirement application timeline. They also cover the Accelerated Annual Increase (AAI) buyout for Tier 1 members and post-retirement return-to-work limits.

The sessions are general — they address the full membership, not your specific situation. You won't leave with a personalized retirement calculation, but you'll have a clearer picture of the process steps and which deadlines matter.

How to Find the Schedule

TRS publishes meeting schedules on trsil.org. Check the current listing for dates, locations, registration requirements, and whether a spouse or partner may attend.

The Personalized Retirement Interview Is the Next Step

The member meeting is orientation. The real planning work starts when you contact TRS directly to schedule your Personalized Retirement Interview (PRI). The PRI generates your customized application packet with your actual numbers — projected benefit amount, service credit tally, any outstanding balances on optional service purchases or the 2.2 formula upgrade.

Call TRS at (877) 927-5877 to request a PRI, ideally 3 to 4 months before your target retirement date.

Making the Most of the Meeting

Come with a list of questions specific to your situation. Common ones worth bringing: How does reciprocal service from SURS or IMRF affect my benefit? What's the 6% salary cap and does my last raise trigger it? When exactly does my 30-day separation period start?

The counselors can point you toward the right forms and deadlines even if they can't answer case-specific questions on the spot.

The TRS Illinois Retirement Guide pairs well with these meetings — it puts the topics TRS covers into a step-by-step sequence with worksheets, so you can work through the decisions at your own pace afterward.
