TRS Illinois Retirement Estimate — How to Read Your Benefit Report

What You're Looking At

TRS sends annual Benefit Reports to active members and provides benefit estimates through the MyTRSIL portal. These documents are the closest thing to a pension projection you'll get before filing your actual retirement application — but they're dense, and the numbers only help if you know what to verify.

The estimate is not a guarantee. It's a projection based on the data TRS has on file. If any of that data is wrong, your estimate is wrong too.

Check Your Service Credit First

The total years of credited service is the single most important number on the report. Under the 2.2% formula, each year adds 2.2% of your Final Average Salary to your pension, so even a small error — half a year missing — translates to a permanent reduction in your monthly check.

Compare the reported service credit against your own employment records:

  • Does every school year you taught appear?
  • Are partial years (under 170 days) calculated correctly as a fraction of a full year?
  • Is reciprocal service from IMRF, SURS, or CTPF reflected if you hold credit in another system?

If something doesn't match, contact TRS Member Services with documentation before you file your retirement application. Corrections get harder after the claim is submitted.

Verify Sick Leave Conversion

Unused, uncompensated sick leave converts to additional service credit at retirement, up to a maximum of 340 days (2.0 years). Your Benefit Report may show an estimated sick leave credit based on what your employer has certified so far.

Check whether the number reflects all your employers. If you taught at multiple districts, each one needs to submit a sick leave certification. Districts don't always do this proactively — you may need to request it.

Sick leave credit can't be used to meet minimum retirement eligibility requirements (the age/service thresholds). It's added on top after you already qualify. But it absolutely increases your pension amount.

The 2.2 Formula Status (Tier 1 Only)

If you're a Tier 1 member who taught before July 1, 1998, part of your service may still be on the old graduated formula (1.67% for the first 10 years, 1.9% for years 11–20, 2.1% for years 21–30, 2.3% for years over 30). The 2.2 formula upgrade, adopted in 1998, gives you a flat 2.2% for every year.

Your Benefit Report should show whether your pre-1998 service has been upgraded to the 2.2 rate. If it hasn't, the report may also show the cost of the upgrade. This cost is reduced or refunded based on post-1998 service:

  • For every 3 years of service taught after July 1, 1998, the upgrade cost is reduced by 1 year.
  • Members with more than 34 years of total service get an additional 25% reduction per year beyond 34, up to a 100% discount at 38 years.

If you're close to retirement and the upgrade cost is listed as outstanding, compare the cost with the estimated increase in your pension before deciding.

Beneficiary Designations

Your report lists your primary and alternate death benefit beneficiaries. Verify these are current. An outdated beneficiary designation can route benefits to an ex-spouse or a deceased relative, creating legal complications for the people you actually want covered.

Updating your beneficiary designation requires a new form with a witness signature — the witness cannot be a named beneficiary.

What the Estimate Doesn't Show

The Benefit Report projects a monthly pension amount, but it typically doesn't show:

  • The net effect of electing a Reversionary Annuity (you'll see this comparison only during the formal application process)
  • The AAI buyout lump sum amount and modified COLA (provided in separate materials when you request your PRI)
  • TRIP health insurance premiums that will be deducted from your pension

These details come later in the application process. The estimate gives you the baseline; the full picture requires the PRI.

For a worksheet that walks through every section of the Benefit Report and flags what to verify, the TRS Illinois Retirement Guide covers each line alongside the corrective steps if something is wrong.
