TRS Illinois Retirement Application Timeline — When to File Every Form
Why 12 Months Isn't Overkill
Most teachers think the retirement application is one form you fill out a few weeks before your last day. In reality, the TRS process involves multiple forms across multiple agencies — TRS, your school district's payroll office, CMS for health insurance, and the IRS for tax withholding. Starting a year out gives you time to fix problems that would otherwise delay your first check.
12 to 9 Months Out: Audit Everything
Log into MyTRSIL and pull up your service credit record. Verify every year of service, check for gaps, and compare what TRS shows against your own records. Common problems to catch:
- Years where you worked fewer than 170 days that may be recorded incorrectly
- Missing reciprocal service from IMRF, SURS, or CTPF
- Sick leave days that haven't been certified
- Optional service credit (out-of-state teaching, military, recognized private school years) that you want to purchase
If you plan to buy optional service credit, request cost statements now. Most purchases must be paid in full before your effective retirement date; pregnancy and adoption leave purchases are exceptions.
9 to 6 Months Out: Get Your Numbers
Request a formal Benefit Estimate from TRS Member Services. This isn't the same as the rough numbers on MyTRSIL — it's a detailed projection based on your actual service and projected final salary.
If you're a Tier 1 member, check whether you have a 2.2 formula upgrade balance outstanding. If you taught before July 1998, some of your early service may still be on the old graduated formula. The upgrade cost may be partially or fully refunded depending on your post-1998 service years.
Contact any reciprocal systems (SURS, IMRF, CTPF) if you hold credit there. Each system needs to know you're planning to retire so they can coordinate the reciprocal calculation.

6 to 3 Months Out: Start the Formal Application
Call TRS at (877) 927-5877 to request your Personalized Retirement Interview (PRI). This is either done online through MyTRSIL or over the phone. The PRI generates your customized retirement application packet — the actual forms you'll submit.
Submit your formal letter of resignation to your school board during this period.
If you have a QILDRO (Qualified Illinois Domestic Relations Order) on file from a divorce, audit it with TRS Legal now. If it uses a percentage, a separate Calculation Order is submitted once the benefit amount is known to determine the alternate payee's share.
3 Months to Your Last Day: Execute
Complete and submit the Retirement Application. Key decisions at this stage:
- Standard Annuity vs. Reversionary Annuity — this choice is irrevocable once submitted
- Beneficiary Designation Form — requires a witness who is not a named beneficiary
- Direct Deposit (Form M-33) — routes your monthly pension to your bank
- W-4P tax withholding — sets federal income tax withholding on pension payments
- TRIP health insurance enrollment — must be submitted within 31 days of your retirement date
After Your Last Day: The Wait
Your employer files the final Supplementary Report and Sick Leave Certification. You observe a mandatory 30-day separation period with your last employer before you can perform any paid duties requiring teacher licensure. For retirement dates effective on or after January 1, 2027, you must also terminate all work with your last employer and remain separated in all roles for at least 30 days before your annuity can begin.
TRS processes your claim in approximately 60–90 days. The first payment is a mailed paper check covering the period back to your effective retirement date. After that, monthly payments are deposited on the first business day of each month.
Keeping It on Track
The TRS Illinois Retirement Guide puts every form, every deadline, and every decision point on a single timeline — organized by who files each item and when it's due — so nothing slips through a crack between agencies.
