NYSTRS Retirement Estimate: How to Read Your Benefit Profile
The Annual Benefit Profile
Every fall, NYSTRS sends active members a Benefit Profile — a personalized document summarizing your credited service, estimated FAS, projected pension, and death benefit coverage. It's the single most important document for retirement planning, and most members don't fully understand what it says.
Service Credit
The first section shows your total credited service years and months. This includes all full-time, part-time, and substitute teaching periods that your employers reported to NYSTRS, plus any purchased prior service or military credit.
Check this number against your own records. If you changed districts, took a leave of absence, or worked part-time for a period, service from those years may have been reported incorrectly or not at all. Catching a discrepancy now gives NYSTRS time to investigate and correct it before you file.
Pension Factor
Your pension factor is derived from your credited service and your tier's multiplier schedule. For Tier 4:
- 1.67% per year for the first 20 years → 33.4%
- 2.0% per year for years 20–30 → adds 20.0%
- 1.5% per year beyond 30 → adds 1.5% per additional year
A Tier 4 member with 28 years of service has a pension factor of 33.4% + (8 × 2.0%) = 49.4%.
The Benefit Profile shows the pension factor NYSTRS calculated using your credited service. If this doesn't match your calculation, it usually means a service discrepancy.

FAS and Age Factor
The estimated FAS on your Profile is based on salary data NYSTRS has received from your employer. It uses the three highest consecutive school years; the 10% annual cap applies to Tiers 4, 5, and 6.
If you're planning to retire before your unreduced age without 30 years of service, the Profile also shows the age reduction factor — the permanent percentage your benefit will be reduced for early retirement. This is the single most expensive number on the page: a 6.5% per year reduction for Tier 6 or a graduated reduction for Tier 4 (5–6% per year depending on age bracket).
Option Projections
The Profile projects your monthly benefit under the Maximum option and under each Joint & Survivor, Pop-up, and Guarantee variant. These projections are estimates — final amounts are calculated when you actually file and NYSTRS audits your last year's salary.
The projections assume a hypothetical beneficiary age for the survivor options. Your actual amounts will differ based on your and your actual beneficiary's ages at retirement.
Paragraph 2 Death Benefit
For eligible Tier 2 through 6 members, the Profile shows a Paragraph 2 post-retirement death benefit if you die after retirement. This benefit continues at no cost to you; it's not deducted from your pension. Check your Profile for the projected amount and coverage details.
What to Do With It
Request a formal benefit estimate through MyNYSTRS if you're within two years of retirement. The formal estimate uses current salary data and provides exact dollar amounts for each payout option based on your actual planned retirement date and beneficiary.
The NYSTRS Retirement Guide explains each section of the Benefit Profile in plain language and includes a worksheet for comparing the option projections side by side.
