How to Read Your NYSTRS Benefit Profile
What the Benefit Profile Is
Every fall, NYSTRS mails active members an annual Benefit Profile — a personalized snapshot of your pension standing. It's the single most important document for retirement planning, and most members spend about 30 seconds glancing at it before filing it away.
That's a mistake. The Benefit Profile contains the raw numbers NYSTRS will use to calculate your pension. If something is wrong — missing service credit, an incorrect tier classification, a salary discrepancy — catching it now is straightforward. Catching it after you've filed for retirement means processing delays.
Key Sections and What They Mean
Membership Tier
Your tier appears near the top of the profile. It's determined by when you first joined NYSTRS or a transferable New York public retirement system. Tier classification governs your vesting requirements, FAS calculation rules, pension factor multipliers, and early retirement reduction penalties.
If the tier listed doesn't match when you first became a NYSTRS member or a member of a transferable New York public retirement system, contact NYSTRS immediately. An incorrect tier assignment changes every benefit calculation downstream.
Total Credited Service
This section shows your accumulated years and months of service credit. It includes full-time teaching years, any purchased prior service, military credit, and fractional credit for part-time work.
Check this number against your own records. Common discrepancies: a partial year that wasn't reported by an employer, substitute teaching days that weren't credited, or a gap year that should have been covered by a prior service purchase.
Final Average Salary (FAS) Projection
The profile shows your current FAS calculation — the highest three consecutive school years of reportable salary (or five years for Tier 6 members who retired before the 2024 reform). The FAS is the baseline in your pension formula.
For Tiers 4, 5, and 6, salary included in the FAS cannot exceed the average of the prior two years by more than 10%. If a year's salary spikes above that cap — from a promotion, stipend increase, or coaching pay — the excess is excluded. The profile's FAS projection should reflect this cap.
Pension Factor
The pension factor is determined by your tier and years of credited service. For Tier 4 (Article 15): 1.67% per year for the first 20 years, 2% per year for years 20–30, and 1.5% per year beyond 30. Multiply the pension factor by your FAS to get your Maximum annual pension at unreduced retirement age.
Projected Maximum Monthly Benefit
This is your estimated monthly pension under the Maximum single-life option — the highest possible payout with no survivor protection. If you elect a Joint & Survivor, Pop-up, or Guarantee option, the actual monthly payment will be lower. NYSTRS provides comparison estimates for each option type when you request a formal benefit estimate.
Paragraph 2 Death Benefit
For eligible Tier 2–6 members, the Benefit Profile includes information about the post-retirement Paragraph 2 death benefit. This is a one-time payment to your designated beneficiary upon your death after retirement. It comes at no cost to you and is separate from any survivor option you may elect.
The Paragraph 2 death benefit decreases as you age after retirement. Understanding the amount helps when evaluating whether you need additional life insurance coverage alongside your pension option selection.
What to Do If Something Looks Wrong
- Compare every line item against your own employment records — hire dates, salary history, leaves of absence
- Check that purchased prior service or military credit appears in the Total Credited Service section
- Verify the FAS figure against your last three years of salary documentation
- If you find a discrepancy, contact NYSTRS through the MyNYSTRS secure messaging system or call to request a correction
Don't wait until you're ready to file Form RET-54. Corrections to service credit records can take months. The annual Benefit Profile is your yearly opportunity to audit and fix your records while there's still time.
The NYSTRS Retirement Guide includes a section-by-section Benefit Profile review worksheet with the specific numbers to verify and the forms to file when corrections are needed.
