NYSTRS Retirement Checklist: 12-Month Countdown to Your Filing Date
12 to 9 Months Before Retirement
Audit your records. Log in to MyNYSTRS and pull your Benefit Profile. Verify your membership tier, total credited service years, and the salary data NYSTRS has on file. Compare against your own employment records and pay stubs.
Request a formal benefit estimate. NYSTRS will calculate your projected monthly pension under the Maximum option and every survivor option, based on your current service credit and projected FAS. You can request this through MyNYSTRS or by phone.
Attend a PREP seminar. The Pension & Retirement Education Program covers plan rules, Social Security coordination, tax implications, and filing logistics. These sessions are free and available online or in person around the state.
File prior service claims. If you have uncredited periods of New York public employment, substitute teaching, or military service, submit Form PRS-2 now. NYSTRS needs six to eight months to verify employment records with former employers. Late claims mean forfeited credit.
6 to 3 Months Before Retirement
Pay for purchased service credit. Once NYSTRS issues your Cost Submittal statement, pay the full amount via lump sum or direct trustee-to-trustee rollover from an IRA or 403(b). All payments must be received before your effective retirement date — no exceptions.
Meet with your district HR office. Review your collective bargaining agreement for:
- Resignation notice deadlines (many districts require 60-90 days)
- Retiree health insurance eligibility and premium contribution terms
- Sick leave conversion under Section 41-j (if your district participates)
- Any contractual retirement incentive windows
Review your beneficiary situation. If you plan to elect a Joint & Survivor or Pop-up option, gather legal proof of your beneficiary's date of birth (birth certificate, passport, or driver's license). If you have a Domestic Relations Order from a divorce, confirm it's been filed with NYSTRS Legal Department.
Schedule a NYSTRS consultation. A one-on-one session (phone or Teams) with a NYSTRS representative can clarify any questions about your specific numbers, option trade-offs, or filing logistics.
90 Days to Effective Date
File Form RET-54. The Application for Service Retirement can be submitted through MyNYSTRS or as a notarized paper form. The filing window opens 90 calendar days before your effective retirement date and closes on the effective date itself.
Filing at least 30 days early ensures your first pension check arrives on the last business day of your retirement month. Late filings push the first payment to the following month.
Confirm your effective retirement date. It must be at least one calendar day after your employment contract expires. For standard June 30 contracts, the earliest valid date is July 1.
Select your benefit payout option. Maximum, Joint & Survivor (100%, 75%, or 50%), Pop-up (100%, 75%, or 50%), or 5-Year/10-Year Guarantee. This selection goes on Form RET-54.
Submit ancillary forms. File Form GRE-54 (Direct Deposit Authorization) with a voided check, and complete your federal tax withholding elections through Form W-4P or the MyNYSTRS tax interface. Get GRE-54 to NYSTRS by the 10th of your retirement month.

30 Days After Retirement
Day 14 deadline. Last day to withdraw your retirement application or change your effective retirement date. Notification must reach NYSTRS in writing.
Day 30 deadline — option election. Your chosen benefit payout option becomes permanently irrevocable. Changes within this window require Form RET-54.6. After day 30, there are no modifications possible.
Day 30 deadline — loan payoff. Any outstanding NYSTRS contribution loan must be paid in full. Unpaid balances after day 30 trigger a permanent actuarial reduction to your monthly pension.
Verify first payment. Confirm receipt of your first interim pension deposit on the last business day of your retirement month (if you filed RET-54 at least 30 days early).
After Finalization (9-12 Months)
NYSTRS completes its audit of your final year's salary data, sick leave adjustments, and employer certifications. You receive a formal calculation letter and a retroactive lump-sum payment covering the difference between your preliminary payments and your finalized benefit.
The NYSTRS Retirement Guide expands each checklist item into a complete action plan with the specific forms, portal navigation steps, and deadline calculations for your tier and retirement date.
