How to Report a Death to TRS Illinois: First Steps for Families
Call TRS Within the First Two Weeks
The first administrative step after an Illinois teacher or retiree dies is notifying TRS Member Services. Call (877) 927-5877 (TTY: (800) 526-0844). Aim to make this call within 7 to 14 days of the death.
When you call, have the following information ready: the deceased member's full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, date of death, home address, and the contact details of whoever will be the primary contact going forward. TRS uses this information to locate the member's file, verify the Beneficiary Designation form on record, and initiate the claim process.
Once the death is logged, TRS generates a personalized Survivor Benefits Claim Packet and mails it to all named primary beneficiaries. That packet contains the forms and instructions for the actual claim.
If the Teacher Was Still Working
For active members, you also need to notify the employing school district's administrative office within about two weeks. The district payroll office must file a final Supplementary Earnings Report with TRS, certifying accumulated creditable service, unused sick leave days, and final salary rates. This report directly affects benefit calculations — it sets the service credit and final average salary used to compute the survivor annuity.
The Direct Deposit Problem
This is the part that catches families off guard. For deceased retirees, TRS pension payments are legally payable through the last day of the calendar month in which the retiree dies. That means if a retiree dies on October 12, the payment deposited on November 1 (covering October) is legitimately the estate's money.
But any payment deposited for a month after the month of death is an overpayment. TRS is required to reclaim it — they initiate automated ACH recalls directly from the bank. If the surviving family has already moved that money or closed the account, the recall fails, and the family faces collection from the estate.
The immediate action: keep the retiree's bank account open and do not withdraw pension deposits until you know which payments TRS will recall. This is typically the single most financially urgent step in the first few weeks.

What Happens Next
After reporting the death, expect to wait for the claim packet to arrive by mail. In the meantime, gather certified copies of the death certificate (you'll need at least one for TRS), your marriage certificate if you're the spouse, and birth certificates for any dependent children. The county clerk or state vital statistics office issues certified copies.
If the deceased was enrolled in TRIP or TRAIL health insurance, dependent coverage terminates at midnight on the date of death. You'll be able to re-enroll once a monthly survivor annuity is approved, but it's worth noting the timeline so you can plan for any gap in coverage.
Our TRS Illinois Survivor Benefits Guide provides the complete chronological workflow from the day of death through the first payment, including document checklists and the forms you'll need at each stage.
