How to Apply for CalSTRS Retirement: Application Checklist and Timeline
The 120-Day Filing Window
CalSTRS accepts your Service Retirement Application up to 120 calendar days before your planned effective retirement date. You can submit it online through myCalSTRS or on paper, but the online route is faster and lets you track the application status in real time.
Your effective retirement date must be at least one calendar day after your last day of paid employment or compensated leave. If your last day of work is June 15, your earliest effective retirement date is June 16.
Most educators target a June 30 or July 1 effective date to align with the end of the school year. For a July 1 retirement, the earliest you can file is March 3 (120 days prior). Filing early gives CalSTRS more processing time and reduces the risk of a delayed first payment.
What You Need Before You File
Gather these items before you start the application:
- myCalSTRS login credentials: You'll submit and track the application here
- Benefit estimate: Run an official estimate through myCalSTRS showing your projected benefit under each payout option and retirement date
- Birth certificates: Unaltered certified copies for yourself and any option beneficiary (spouse, domestic partner, or other named survivor)
- Marriage certificate or domestic partnership registration: If naming a spouse or partner as an option beneficiary
- Divorce documentation: If you have a prior divorce, confirm that a court-certified Domestic Relations Order (DRO) is on file with CalSTRS — an unfiled DRO can freeze your application
- Direct deposit bank information: Routing and account numbers for your monthly benefit payment
- Tax withholding preferences: Federal and California state withholding elections
Walking Through the Application
The application has several sections, each requiring specific elections:
Retirement effective date: The date your pension begins. CalSTRS calculates your age factor based on your exact age on the last day of the month in which this date falls.
Payout option election: Choose between Member-Only Benefit (maximum monthly amount, no survivor continuation), 100% Joint-and-Survivor, 75%, 50%, or Compound Option. This decision is permanent 30 days after your first benefit check.
Spousal or domestic partner consent: If you're married or in a registered domestic partnership and elect Member-Only or name someone other than your spouse or partner as option beneficiary, consent is required under Education Code Section 24200.5. For online applications, the consent section is handled electronically. For paper applications, the spouse's or partner's signature must be notarized or witnessed by an authorized CalSTRS representative.
DBS distribution election: Separately choose how to receive your Defined Benefit Supplement balance — lump sum, rollover, annuity, period-certain, or combination.
Beneficiary designation: Name your primary and secondary recipients for the one-time lump-sum death benefit (separate from the option beneficiary).

The Spousal Consent Requirement
Under California Education Code Section 24200.5, if you're married or in a registered domestic partnership and elect the Member-Only Benefit or name someone other than your spouse or partner as your option beneficiary, the required consent applies. If consent is withheld or unavailable, CalSTRS converts the election to a 50% Beneficiary Option naming the spouse or partner.
If your spouse or partner cannot provide required consent, ask CalSTRS about the applicable process before the filing deadline.
For online applications submitted through myCalSTRS, the consent process is electronic. For paper applications, the spouse's or partner's signature must be notarized or witnessed by an authorized CalSTRS representative.
After You Submit
Once CalSTRS receives your application:
- Confirmation: You'll see the application status update on myCalSTRS. Paper filers receive a confirmation letter.
- Document review: CalSTRS reviews all submitted documents and may request additional items (missing birth certificates, unresolved DRO issues).
- Employer certification: Your district's payroll office certifies your final earnings and unused sick leave balance through the Secure Employer Website. This happens after your last day of work.
- Benefit calculation: CalSTRS calculates your final benefit amount once all employer reports are processed.
- First payment: Monthly payments are normally scheduled for the first business day of the month. CalSTRS has a 45-day statutory target for the initial payment after the retirement date or application approval. If employer reports are pending, CalSTRS may issue an estimated interim payment at about 80–85% of the estimate and reconcile later.
What Can Delay Your First Check
The most common delays:
- Missing or incomplete spousal consent — the application stalls until consent is resolved
- Unfiled Domestic Relations Order from a prior divorce — CalSTRS can't finalize benefits until community property claims are cleared
- Employer payroll reports not yet submitted — CalSTRS may issue an estimated interim payment while the district certifies final earnings through the Secure Employer Website
- Pending service credit purchases — any redeposit or permissive purchase must be paid in full before your effective retirement date
If your first payment is an interim estimate, CalSTRS reconciles the amount after final employer reports are processed. Budget for a gap between your last paycheck and your first benefit payment.
