CalPERS Retirement Application: How to Apply Step by Step
The 120-Day Filing Window
You can submit your CalPERS Service Retirement Election Application no earlier than 120 calendar days before your chosen retirement date. Submit it before the window opens and CalPERS will not accept it. Wait too long past your target date and you risk pushing your retirement into a later month, which could affect your age factor, your final compensation period, and your health coverage eligibility.
The filing window is not a suggestion — it is a statutory limit. Plan to submit within the first few weeks of the window so you have time to correct any issues CalPERS identifies.
Online Application Through myCalPERS
The fastest route is the online application through the myCalPERS portal. Log in, navigate to the Retirement section, and the system walks you through each section: personal information, retirement date, payout option election, beneficiary designation, and tax withholding.
The online application lets you review and edit your information before submission and upload required documents — such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, domestic partnership filings, and divorce decrees — directly through the portal. After submission, you receive a confirmation and can track your application status online.
Paper Application: PUB 43
If you prefer paper or your situation is complex (multiple reciprocal systems, court-ordered community property divisions, or difficulties with the online portal), you can request or download PUB 43 — the Service Retirement Election Application booklet. If CalPERS requires a spouse or registered domestic partner's signature, have it witnessed by a Notary Public or CalPERS Regional Office representative before mailing. The signature is not required when the option pays that spouse or partner 100% of your monthly allowance and you name them as the sole beneficiary for any lump-sum benefits.
Paper applications take longer to process because CalPERS staff must manually enter your information and verify documents. If anything is missing or illegible, they mail you a request for clarification, which adds weeks.

Documents You Need Before Filing
Gather these before you enter the 120-day window:
- Your birth certificate — CalPERS uses it to verify your age and age factor.
- Birth certificates for each named lifetime beneficiary — if you elect Option 2, 2W, 3, 3W, or 4, the actuarial reduction depends on the beneficiary's age.
- Marriage certificate or domestic partnership registration — required if you are married or partnered, regardless of which payout option you choose.
- Divorce decree and qualified domestic relations order (QDRO) — if a former spouse has a community property claim against your pension. Submit these to CalPERS well before filing; resolving a pending claim can take months.
- Voided check or direct deposit information — for setting up your monthly pension payment.
If any document requires translation, certified court orders, or notarization, build in extra time.
Choosing Your Retirement Date
Your retirement date determines your age factor, your final compensation period endpoint, and whether you meet the 120-day health coverage separation rule. Three things to consider:
Age factor quarters. Your benefit factor increases at each birthday quarter (every three months). Retiring at 60 years and 3 months gives you a higher factor than retiring at 60 years and 0 months. If your target date is close to a quarter boundary, waiting a few weeks can permanently increase your monthly benefit.
Final compensation endpoint. Classic members using a 12-month final compensation period benefit from retiring after their highest-paid 12 consecutive months. If you are expecting a raise or step increase, consider whether waiting captures it in your calculation.
Health coverage. Your retirement date must fall within 120 days of your last day on payroll to preserve PEMHCA retiree health benefits. This is non-negotiable.
What Happens After You Submit
CalPERS receives your application and begins processing. Your employer must submit a separation certification confirming your final pay rates, last day on payroll, and unused sick leave hours. CalPERS cannot finalize your benefit until this certification arrives.
Once your application is approved, CalPERS says your monthly benefit payment usually begins within four to six weeks. This first check triggers the 30-day irrevocable window: you have exactly 30 calendar days from the date that check is issued to change your payout option, change your beneficiary, or cancel your retirement entirely. On day 31, your election becomes permanent under California Government Code Section 21472.
For a structured walkthrough of every section of the application and a pre-submission document audit checklist, the CalPERS Service Retirement Guide covers the full filing sequence from estimate to first check.
