CalPERS 30-Day Option Change Window: What Happens After Your First Check
How the 30-Day Window Works
Under California Government Code Section 21462, your payout option election becomes permanently irrevocable 30 calendar days after CalPERS issues your first retirement payment. That means if your first check arrives on March 1, you have until March 31 to submit a written change.
During those 30 days, you can:
- Switch from one payout option to another (for example, moving from the Unmodified Allowance to Option 2W)
- Change your named lifetime beneficiary
- Cancel your retirement application
After the 30-day window, your election is irrevocable except for changes allowed under CalPERS qualifying-event rules.
Why the Clock Starts at Issuance, Not Receipt
CalPERS counts from the date the system issues the payment — not the date it hits your bank account. If there's a weekend or banking delay between issuance and deposit, those days still count against your 30-day window.
Use CalPERS's issue date for the first benefit payment to start the count; your financial institution determines when a direct deposit becomes available.
What You Can Change (and What You Cannot)
Within the 30-day window, changes are broad. You can switch between the Unmodified Allowance, Option 1, Options 2/2W, Options 3/3W, and Option 4 variations. You can name a different lifetime beneficiary. You can even cancel retirement and go back to work.
After the window closes, the only changes CalPERS allows are for narrowly defined Qualifying Life Events:
- Marriage or registration of a domestic partnership after retirement
- Death of your designated lifetime beneficiary
- Divorce, legal separation, or annulment from a spouse who is your life-option beneficiary; certain court orders that award you 100% of your CalPERS benefit can also qualify
A qualifying event can permit a change to your lifetime beneficiary or monthly benefit, but available choices depend on the event and your current option.

Common Scenarios That Trigger a Last-Minute Change
Most retirees who use the 30-day window fall into a few categories.
The first check is lower than expected. The initial payment sometimes arrives as a partial warrant covering only part of the month. Before panicking and switching options, verify with CalPERS whether the amount reflects a prorated first month rather than your actual monthly benefit.
A spouse reconsiders survivor protection. Some couples choose the Unmodified Allowance for maximum monthly income, then realize the surviving spouse would have no ongoing pension income. The 30-day window is the last chance to switch to Option 2 (100% survivor benefit) or Option 3 (50% survivor benefit).
The retiree decides to cancel. If your employer offers a retention incentive or your personal circumstances change, cancellation during the 30-day window returns you to active membership. Your service credit and contributions are restored as if retirement never happened.
How to Submit an Option Change
To change your option during the 30-day window, submit a written request or amended application to CalPERS. Confirm the current submission method and any supporting-document or spouse/partner signature requirements with CalPERS before filing.
The Practical Risk of Waiting
The biggest danger isn't making the wrong choice — it's running out the clock without realizing it. If your first check is delayed by incomplete employer certification or missing documents, you still have 30 days from issuance. But if processing wraps up quickly and the check arrives earlier than expected, your window is shorter than you planned for.
Set a calendar reminder for Day 25 after issuance. That gives you five calendar days to submit changes if needed.
