CalPERS First Retirement Check: When It Arrives and What to Verify
How Long Until Your First CalPERS Check Arrives
Most CalPERS retirees receive their first payment within about 45 days of the retirement date or employer certification, whichever is later — assuming the employer has submitted its certification paperwork on time. That first payment is called a retirement warrant, and it covers the period from your retirement date forward.
This is a typical processing time, not a statutory deadline. CalPERS needs the employer certification to verify your service credit and final compensation, calculate the benefit under your chosen payout option, and issue the direct deposit or mailed check. Missing paperwork or other complications can extend the timeline.
If your retirement date is April 1 and everything goes smoothly, you might see your first deposit in mid-May. Your regular payments then follow CalPERS's monthly schedule.
What Causes Delays
The most common cause of a delayed first check is your employer. CalPERS cannot finalize your benefit calculation until your employer submits the Employer Certification form, which reports your final separation date, final pay rate, and total unused sick leave hours. Some employer HR departments process this within days. Others take weeks, especially for school districts closing out the academic year.
Other delay triggers:
- Missing vital records. If you named a lifetime beneficiary under Options 2, 2W, 3, 3W, or 4, CalPERS needs their certified birth certificate. Missing documents stall the file.
- Unresolved community property claims. A pending divorce decree or Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) on file with the Community Property Unit halts processing until the court order is reviewed and applied.
- Service credit purchase payoffs. If you elected to purchase service credit (redeposit, military service, or service prior to membership) and the payoff is still in progress at retirement, CalPERS must wait for the final accounting.
- Paper application errors. Submitting PUB 43 by mail with blank fields, unsigned spousal consent sections, or missing tax withholding elections creates a correction loop.
Using the myCalPERS online application reduces processing time because the system validates required fields before you submit. You can also track your application status through the portal — milestones like "Application Received," "Employer Certification Pending," and "First Check Processing" update in real time.
How Retroactive Pay Works
Your first check is not just one month of pension. It includes retroactive pay back to your effective retirement date, covering the monthly benefits due while CalPERS processes your application.
If you retired on April 1 and your first check arrives in June, it includes the monthly benefits due since April 1. After that, monthly payments settle into the regular schedule.
This retroactive structure is important to understand because it means the first check will be significantly larger than your regular monthly amount. That lump of back pay is not a bonus — it is owed compensation for the gap between your retirement date and your first warrant.

The 30-Day Window After Your First Check
Under California Government Code Section 21462, you have exactly 30 calendar days from the date CalPERS issues your first retirement payment to change your payout option, change your lifetime beneficiary, or cancel your retirement entirely. On Day 31, your election becomes permanently irrevocable.
This 30-day window is the last opportunity to correct a mistake. If you selected Option 2W (100% survivor benefit, no pop-up) but realize Option 3 (50% survivor, with pop-up) better fits your household budget, you can submit a written change request within those 30 days.
After the window closes, changes are only permitted under narrowly defined Qualifying Life Events — a subsequent marriage, a registered domestic partnership, or the death of your designated beneficiary.
What to Verify Before the Clock Runs Out
Use those 30 days to audit three things:
Verify the monthly amount. Compare the gross benefit on your first check against the myCalPERS estimate you generated before filing. If the numbers differ by more than a few dollars, contact CalPERS immediately. Common discrepancies include missed sick leave conversion (your employer may have reported fewer hours than you accrued) or an incorrect final compensation period.
Confirm your payout option. Your first warrant notice should state which option you elected. Verify it matches what you intended when you signed the application.
Check your tax withholding. Your first check reflects the federal and California state withholding elections you made on the application. If you need to adjust withholding, you can update it through myCalPERS at any time — but confirm the initial withholding is not wildly off before your second check arrives.
If you want a structured approach to auditing your CalPERS retirement from the estimate through your first payment, the CalPERS Service Retirement Guide walks through the entire sequence and includes a pre-submission document checklist.
Planning for the Income Gap
The processing period means you may go at least one payroll cycle — possibly two — without income from either your employer or CalPERS. Your final paycheck arrives on your normal schedule after separation. Your first pension check arrives weeks later.
Plan for this gap. Some members use their vacation or annual leave cashout (which PEPRA members cannot count as pensionable compensation, but Classic members should check their contract terms) to bridge the gap. Others set aside savings specifically for this period.
The gap is predictable, and the retroactive payment eventually makes you whole. But if your household budget depends on continuous income, knowing the timeline in advance prevents an unnecessary cash crunch.
