VRS Hazardous Duty Supplement: Who Qualifies and How It Works
Who Receives the Hazardous Duty Supplement
SPORS, VaLORS, and eligible political subdivision hazardous-duty members have separate retirement rules from general employees. Eligible members receive a Hazardous Duty Supplement, a monthly allowance that continues until Normal Social Security Retirement Age. Confirm your coverage and the supplement amount with VRS.
SPORS (State Police Officers' Retirement System) — state police officers.
VaLORS (Virginia Law Officers' Retirement System) — members of the Virginia Law Officers' Retirement System.
Political subdivision hazardous duty employees — eligible local police officers, firefighters, and deputy sheriffs; enhanced benefits depend on the employer's election.
These positions are excluded from the Hybrid Retirement Plan regardless of hire date. Political subdivision members should confirm their plan tier and elected benefits with VRS or their employer.
How Much the Supplement Pays
The supplement is a monthly allowance from retirement until you reach Normal Social Security Retirement Age. Ask VRS to confirm the amount for your plan and record.
When the Supplement Ends
The supplement stops when you reach Normal Social Security Retirement Age. Social Security benefits, if you qualify, are filed separately through SSA. Use your VRS and SSA estimates to plan for the change in income.

Retirement Eligibility for Hazardous Duty Members
SPORS and VaLORS members can retire unreduced at age 60 with at least 5 years of service credit, or age 50 with at least 25 years. Political subdivision members should confirm their plan's eligibility rules with VRS or their employer.
Reduced retirement may be available earlier under specific plan provisions. VaLORS multipliers are 1.70% or 2.00%, depending on election and service credit. Enhanced political subdivision multipliers are 1.70% or 1.85%, based on the employer's election.
Planning Around the Step-Down
The gap between supplement-end and Social Security filing is the central planning challenge. If you retire at 50, the years until your Normal Social Security Retirement Age may create a long period of higher income before the supplement ends. For illustration, a $5,000 combined monthly benefit with a $1,500 supplement would fall to $3,500 when the supplement ends; use your VRS estimate for your own amount.
The Virginia VRS Retirement Guide covers how the supplement interacts with your payout option election, how to read the hazardous duty section of your VRS benefit estimate, and the return-to-work rules specific to critical shortage public safety positions.
