TRS Illinois Direct Deposit and W-4P Tax Withholding
Setting up your TRS pension payment logistics is straightforward, but a few details catch educators off guard — especially the gap between your last district paycheck and the first pension deposit, and the tax withholding choices that affect every monthly payment going forward.
Direct Deposit Setup (Form M-33)
TRS uses Form M-33 (Depository Agreement for Direct Deposit) to authorize monthly pension deposits into your bank account. You submit it as part of your retirement application packet, along with your bank's routing number and account number for verification.
Once direct deposit is active, regular monthly annuity payments are issued on the first day of each month. The initial payment follows the retirement claim processing schedule.
The First Payment Is Retroactive
TRS retirement claims take approximately 60 to 90 days to process from your effective retirement date. Once the claim is finalized, the first payment is issued retroactively to that date. Confirm with TRS how your initial payment will be delivered; regular monthly payments are issued on the first day of each month.
If you retire effective July 1 and processing wraps up in September, the initial payment covers the eligible period back to your effective retirement date. Later monthly payments follow the regular first-of-the-month schedule.
Federal Tax Withholding (W-4P)
IRS Form W-4P sets your federal income tax withholding on recurring pension payments. You complete it as part of the retirement application and can update it at any time afterward.
Illinois does not tax TRS retirement income at the state level — pension benefits are exempt from Illinois income tax. But federal taxes apply. The W-4P lets you choose your filing status, claim dependents, and specify additional withholding amounts or adjustments.
If you're also receiving Social Security benefits, consider the combined tax impact. The WEP and GPO repeal applies to benefits payable from January 2024 onward; people who never applied must file a new claim with SSA, and previously reduced beneficiaries should confirm that SSA adjusted their payments. TRS pension income plus Social Security can push you into a higher federal bracket than your teaching salary alone. Some retirees elect higher withholding to avoid a surprise bill at tax time.

The Excess Benefit Fund
If your pension exceeds the IRS Section 415(b) annual benefit limit for the applicable year, a portion may be paid through the TRS Excess Benefit Fund rather than the main pension trust. Confirm the current limit, payment routing, and tax forms with TRS and your tax professional.
Getting the Paperwork Right
Both Form M-33 and W-4P are submitted with your retirement application packet — the one TRS sends after your Personalized Retirement Interview (PRI). Double-check your bank details before submitting; an error on the routing or account number delays your first direct deposit.
The TRS Illinois Retirement Guide walks through every form in the application packet in the order you'll complete them, including the tax withholding decision and when to expect each payment.
