STRS Ohio Overpayment After Death: How Bank Clawbacks Work
Why Overpayments Happen
STRS Ohio pays monthly pension benefits via electronic funds transfer on the first banking day of each month. Benefits cover the full month in which the retiree was alive — a retiree who dies on March 15 is fully entitled to the March payment. But a payment that deposits for April (or any month after the month of death) is an overpayment that STRS Ohio is legally obligated to recover.
The overpayment problem is a timing issue. If a retiree dies late in the month and the family doesn't notify STRS Ohio before the next payment cycle runs, the system automatically deposits the next month's benefit into the retiree's bank account. This happens because automated systems don't know about the death until someone reports it.
The Electronic Recall Process
When STRS Ohio receives a death notification, it issues an electronic recall to the financial institution for any benefit payments deposited after the month of death. Ask the bank how the recall will be handled and when it will post.
For the recall to work smoothly, the funds need to be sitting in the account. This is why the first rule is critical: do not withdraw, transfer, or spend any pension deposits that arrive after the month of death. Leave the money in the account and let the automated recall handle it.
What Happens When the Money Isn't There
If a family member withdraws or transfers funds before the recall processes, the recall may not recover those funds automatically. Contact STRS Ohio promptly at 888-227-7877 and follow its instructions for resolving the overpayment.

Handling Joint Bank Accounts
Many retired couples share a joint bank account that receives both the pension deposit and the household's other income. When the retiree dies and the surviving spouse is the joint account holder, there's a natural temptation to keep using the account normally — paying bills, buying groceries, living life.
The safest approach: identify the exact amount of any post-death pension deposit, mentally set it aside, and don't touch it until the recall processes. If you're unsure whether a particular deposit came from STRS Ohio, check the transaction description — it will show the STRS Ohio payment reference.
If the joint account doesn't have enough liquid funds to cover both the recall and the household's immediate needs, contact STRS Ohio at 888-227-7877 to discuss the situation. Proactive communication is always better than a failed recall.
Timing the Death Notification
Reporting the death promptly reduces overpayment risk. If the retiree dies on October 12 and the family notifies STRS Ohio on October 14, the system can halt the November 1 payment before it's issued. If the family waits until November 5, the November payment has already deposited and must be recalled.
The October payment is fully owed regardless of death date (benefits cover the entire month the retiree was alive). The November payment is the first one that constitutes an overpayment.
Tax Implications of Recalled Payments
If STRS Ohio recovers a pension payment, the recovery can affect tax reporting. Keep documentation of the deposit date, amount, and date of recall, and ask STRS Ohio or a tax professional whether a corrected Form 1099-R will be issued and how to report the repayment.
The STRS Ohio Survivor Benefits Guide covers the full post-death financial timeline, including overpayment prevention steps and a tracker for managing deposits, recalls, and the transition to survivor benefit payments.
