NYSTRS Retirement Payout Options Explained: Maximum, Survivor, Pop-Up, and Guarantee
The Options at a Glance
Every NYSTRS retiree picks one payout option, and it locks permanently 30 days after retirement. Each option pays you a monthly benefit for life — the difference is what happens after you die.
Maximum: The highest monthly amount. Payments end entirely when you die. No survivor benefit of any kind.
Joint & Survivor (100%, 75%, 50%, or 25%): A reduced monthly payment during your lifetime. When you die, your named beneficiary receives the selected share of that reduced amount for the rest of their life. If your beneficiary dies first, your payment stays at the reduced level — you can't switch to Maximum or name a new beneficiary.
Pop-up Survivor (100%, 75%, or 50%): Works like Joint & Survivor with one critical addition — if your beneficiary predeceases you, your monthly payment "pops up" to the full Maximum amount. The trade-off is a lower starting payment than the standard Joint & Survivor version.
Guarantee (5-year or 10-year): If you die within the guarantee period, your beneficiary receives your monthly payments for the remaining months. If you outlive the guarantee period, payments continue for your life but nothing goes to a beneficiary. You can change your beneficiary at any time, unlike the survivor options.
The Trade-Offs in Real Terms
The size of the reduction depends on your age and your beneficiary's age; NYSTRS uses actuarial calculations to determine the monthly amount.
Your actual payments under each option depend on your age and, for survivor options, your beneficiary's age. Request NYSTRS estimates to compare the options for your circumstances.
NYSTRS Does Not Offer a Partial Lump-Sum Option at Retirement
Unlike some state pension systems, NYSTRS does not offer a Partial Lump-Sum Option at retirement for standard service retirements. Those retirement benefits are paid as monthly annuities.

Which Option Fits
No option is universally right. The decision depends on:
- Whether your spouse or partner has their own pension or retirement income
- Whether you carry life insurance that could replace the survivor benefit
- Your health and your beneficiary's health
- Whether you're comfortable with the risk of your beneficiary dying first under a non-Pop-up option
The Pop-up variants cost a little more each month but eliminate the worst-case scenario — being locked into a reduced benefit for decades after your beneficiary is gone.
The NYSTRS Retirement Guide includes a comparison worksheet that shows your actual dollar amounts for every option, so you can see exactly what each choice costs.
