NYSLRS Retirement Payout Options Explained
The Choice You Can't Undo
Every NYSLRS retiree must select a payout option. The choice determines your monthly payment for the rest of your life, whether anyone receives benefits after you die, and how much your monthly check gets reduced to fund that survivor protection. Once the 30-day post-retirement change window closes, the election is permanently irrevocable.
Single Life Allowance (Maximum)
This is the highest monthly payment NYSLRS offers. It pays you for your lifetime and stops the day you die. No monthly payments continue to a beneficiary after your death.
Retirees who choose the Maximum are typically those without dependents, those whose spouse has their own pension or retirement income, or those who plan to use the extra monthly income to fund a life insurance policy as an alternative form of survivor protection.
Joint Allowance Options (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%)
Joint Allowance options reduce your monthly benefit during your lifetime to guarantee continuing payments to one named beneficiary after you die. The beneficiary receives a percentage of your reduced benefit for their remaining lifetime:
- 100% Joint: Beneficiary gets the same monthly amount you received
- 75% Joint: Beneficiary gets 75% of your monthly amount
- 50% Joint: Beneficiary gets half your monthly amount
- 25% Joint: Beneficiary gets a quarter of your monthly amount
The higher the percentage, the larger the reduction to your own monthly check. The reduction also depends on the age difference between you and your beneficiary — a younger beneficiary means a larger reduction because the actuarial tables project more years of survivor payments.
One important limitation: if your beneficiary dies before you, your benefit stays at the reduced rate for the rest of your life. You don't get the Maximum back.
If your beneficiary is your spouse, they receive 50% of any COLA increases that applied to your benefit.

Pop-Up Joint Allowance Options
Pop-Up options work identically to standard Joint Allowances with one difference: if your beneficiary dies before you, your monthly benefit "pops up" to the full Single Life Allowance (Maximum) rate.
That pop-up feature costs something. Your monthly payment under a Pop-Up option is slightly lower than the equivalent standard Joint Allowance. The gap represents the actuarial cost of the restoration guarantee.
For members whose beneficiary is significantly older or has health concerns, the Pop-Up can be worth the extra reduction — it provides the same survivor protection while eliminating the risk of paying for coverage you'll never use.
Period Certain Options (5-Year and 10-Year)
These guarantee that pension payments continue for a minimum of 5 or 10 years, regardless of when you die. If you die within the guarantee period, your beneficiary receives the remaining monthly payments until the period expires. After the guarantee period ends, payments stop at your death.
Key differences from Joint Allowance options:
- The reduction depends only on your age, not your beneficiary's
- You can name multiple beneficiaries
- You can change beneficiaries at any time, even after the 30-day window
- Beneficiaries do not receive COLA
- If you outlive the guarantee period, the option provides no survivor benefit at all
Choosing Without a Recommendation
NYSLRS counselors won't tell you which option to pick, and neither will any responsible guide. The right choice depends on whether your household needs survivor income, how old your beneficiary is, whether they have their own retirement income, and how you feel about the monthly reduction.
