NC TSERS First Retirement Check: When It Arrives and How Direct Deposit Works
The Standard Timeline: The 25th of Your Retirement Month
Your effective retirement date is always the first day of a calendar month. If everything is processed on time, your first monthly pension payment hits your bank account on the 25th of that same month.
To meet that target, the Retirement Systems Division needs all properly completed required forms, including Form 6E, by the 10th of the retirement month. Form 6E is the document where you select your payment option — Maximum Allowance, Option 2, 3, 4, 6-2, or 6-3 — and designate your monthly survivor beneficiary. It requires your signature and a notary seal.
If RSD receives all properly completed required forms by the 10th, it issues the first benefit payment on the 25th. After that first month, every subsequent payment lands on the 25th (or the prior business day when the 25th falls on a weekend or holiday).
When the First Check Is Delayed
If Form 6E is processed after the 25th, RSD issues payment within one week of processing, including retroactive payment back to your effective retirement date. The delay affects when the money reaches your account, not the effective date of the benefit.
The most common causes of delay:
- Employer certification lag: Your employing agency must submit Form 641 (for public school employees) or Form 6C (for state agency employees) certifying your final salary, sick leave balance, and last day of work. Until RSD receives this certification, your benefit cannot be finalized
- Missing documentation: Proof of birth for you or your designated survivor beneficiary, incomplete notarization on Form 6E, or unsigned direct deposit authorization
- Service credit disputes: Discrepancies between your MARS statement and employer payroll records that require reconciliation
Approximately 50% of new TSERS retirees experience a benefit recalculation during the 12 months following retirement, based on final payroll reporting from the employer. If your initial payment is based on estimated data, RSD will adjust it once final numbers arrive and issue a retroactive correction.
Setting Up Direct Deposit
Submit Form 170 (Authorizing Direct Deposit) alongside Form 6E before your retirement date. The form requires your bank's routing number, your account number, and verification from the financial institution.
Once direct deposit is active, every monthly payment is deposited automatically on the 25th. You can change your banking information after retirement through the ORBIT portal or by filing an updated Form 170 with RSD.
If you do not set up direct deposit, RSD mails a paper check. Paper checks take several additional business days to arrive and carry the risk of mail delays or loss.

The Cash-Flow Gap You Need to Plan For
Your final active paycheck and your first pension payment may not overlap cleanly. Most employees receive their last paycheck on a biweekly or monthly cycle tied to the employer's payroll calendar. Your pension check arrives on the 25th of your retirement month — but only if all forms were processed on time.
For teachers retiring on July 1, this gap can be particularly tight. The last paycheck often arrives in mid-June, and the first pension check on July 25 is optimistic if employer certification takes time during the summer closure.
Build a cash-flow buffer of at least one to two months of living expenses to cover this transition window. Retirees who planned for a July 25 payment and did not receive it until mid-August have found themselves managing household bills without income for six weeks.
Ongoing Payments and Tax Withholding
After the first payment, your monthly pension arrives on the 25th of every month for the rest of your life (or your beneficiary's life under a survivor option). Each payment reflects your chosen tax withholding from Form 290, your health plan premium deductions, and your contributory death benefit premium if elected.
RSD issues IRS Form 1099-R by January 31 each year, documenting your total pension distributions and taxable amounts. If your service includes time before and after the August 12, 1989 Bailey settlement cutoff, part of your benefit may be exempt from NC state income tax.
The NC TSERS Retirement Guide includes a first-check cash flow worksheet that maps your final paycheck date against the pension payment timeline, so you can budget the transition gap before you submit your retirement application.
