MyTRSIL Account After Death: Accessing Portal and Contacting TRS Springfield
The Portal Locks When TRS Records the Death
Once TRS Illinois records a member's death in their system, the MyTRSIL online portal account is locked. The username and password stop working. This isn't a glitch — it's a deliberate security measure to prevent unauthorized access to the deceased member's pension records, benefit elections, and personal information.
The lock occurs after TRS records the death. If you're trying to log into the member's account to find information about beneficiary designations, contribution balances, or retirement elections, contact TRS Member Services instead.
What Information You Can't Get From the Portal
Families often want to access the MyTRSIL account for specific records:
- Beneficiary Designation form — to verify who the member named as primary and alternate beneficiaries
- Contribution balance — to estimate the contribution refund amount
- Retirement election details — to check whether the retiree took the 1% survivor contribution refund at retirement, which determines if a monthly survivor annuity is available
- Reversionary annuity election — to confirm whether the member elected a reduced pension to provide an additional survivor benefit
- TRIP enrollment status — to understand current health insurance coverage
TRS reviews the member's file after the death is reported to verify the beneficiary form, any QILDROs, and tier status. Ask Member Services which other details it can confirm and how to request supporting records.
How to Report a Death and Reach TRS Springfield
TRS Member Services phone line: (877) 927-5877. This is the main number for reporting a death, requesting claim packets, and asking about the member's benefit records. TRS staff are in Springfield and operate on Central Time. TTY users can call (800) 526-0844.
When you call, have the following information ready:
- The deceased member's full legal name and Social Security number
- Date of birth and date of death
- The member's home address on file with TRS
- Your name and relationship to the member
- Your contact phone number and mailing address
TRS uses this information to locate the member's file, verify the death, and initiate the claim packet. TRS mails a personalized Survivor Benefits Claim Packet to the named primary beneficiaries.

Submitting Documents Without the Portal
Since the portal is locked, survivors submit claim documents through three alternative channels:
Secure portal: Completed forms can be uploaded through the secure MyTRSIL portal. Follow the claim-packet instructions rather than trying to log in as the deceased member.
Fax: (217) 753-0964. Include the member's name and Social Security number on a cover sheet.
Mail: TRS headquarters at 2815 W. Washington Street, PO Box 19253, Springfield, IL 62794-9253. Send documents by certified mail or a tracked delivery service so you have proof of receipt.
For time-sensitive documents like the Survivor Benefits Application and tax withholding elections (Form W-4P or W-4R), fax or secure upload are faster than mail. TRS confirms document receipt if you call to verify.
Don't Wait for the Portal — Call First
The single most important thing a surviving family member can do is call TRS at (877) 927-5877 within the first two weeks after the death. Reporting the death lets TRS halt post-death annuity payments, initiate the claim packet, and collect the contact information needed to guide you through the process.
You don't need the member's login credentials to start a survivor benefits claim. Contact TRS to report the death and request the claim packet; TRS can explain which records are available to claimants and how to request them.
For a complete walkthrough of the notification and claim process — including what to say on the initial call and every document you'll need — the TRS Illinois Survivor Benefits Guide covers each step from first contact through final payment.
