VRS First Retirement Check: When It Arrives and What to Expect
You have submitted your VRS retirement application, separated from employment, and cleared the mandatory break-in-service period. Now the question everyone asks: when does the first check actually arrive?
The VRS Payment Timeline
VRS issues monthly pension payments on the first business day of the month following the benefit month. That means if your effective retirement date is July 1, your first payment covers July and is deposited on August 1 (or the next business day if August 1 falls on a weekend or holiday).
There is a built-in delay between your retirement date and your first deposit. You must complete the mandatory one-full-calendar-month break in service, while the timing of your last employer paycheck depends on the employer's pay schedule.
Plan for this gap. Ask HR when your final paycheck will arrive, and budget around the first business day of the month following your benefit month for your first VRS payment.
Setting Up Direct Deposit
VRS requires direct deposit for monthly pension payments. You set this up by completing Form VRS-57 (Authorization for Direct Deposit) or through your myVRS account. Submit this with your retirement application so there is no delay when your first payment processes.
Double-check your routing and account numbers before submitting. A mis-entered digit can delay your first payment while VRS reissues it.
What the Confirmation Letter Tells You
After VRS processes your first payment, you will receive a payment confirmation letter in the mail. This letter breaks down your gross monthly benefit, federal and Virginia state tax withholdings, any Health Insurance Credit additions, Group Life Insurance deductions, and the payout option you elected.
Review this letter carefully. Confirm that the monthly amount matches the estimate you reviewed before filing. If the payout option listed does not match your election, contact VRS immediately — once the first payment is disbursed, your option election is permanent and irrevocable.

The Ongoing Payment Schedule
After the first payment, VRS follows a consistent monthly schedule: your pension is deposited on the first business day of each month for the prior month's benefit. You can view payment history and upcoming deposits through myVRS.
Tax withholding adjustments — federal (W-4P) and Virginia state — can be updated at any time through myVRS or by submitting updated forms to VRS. You will receive IRS Form 1099-R every January detailing the prior year's total distributions, taxable amounts, and withholdings.
Your First COLA
For unreduced retirees, the first Cost-of-Living Adjustment applies on July 1 following one full calendar year of retirement. If you retire on July 1, 2026, your first COLA takes effect July 1, 2027. If you retire on August 1, 2026, your first COLA does not apply until July 1, 2028 — you need a full calendar year, not just until the next July.
The COLA formula differs by plan: Plan 1 can receive up to 5% annually, while Plan 2 and Hybrid are capped at 3%.
The VRS Retirement Guide maps out the complete payment timeline from application through first deposit, including the income gap planning worksheet and a month-by-month calendar of what to expect.
