UFT Pension Consultation Appointment: What to Prepare and What to Expect

What the Consultation Actually Is

The United Federation of Teachers offers free pension consultation appointments to members in good standing who are preparing to retire from NYC TRS. A UFT pension counselor walks through your specific benefit estimate, discusses your payout option choices, and reviews the filing timeline.

These consultations are one of the most trusted resources among NYC DOE teachers. The counselors have deep expertise in DOE payroll mechanics, CAR day cash-outs, and Welfare Fund benefit coordination — details that TRS Member Services counselors do not handle.

The problem is availability. Appointment slots fill quickly, especially during peak filing season (March through June). A 30-minute consultation is not long enough to learn the system from scratch, make payout option decisions, and ask follow-up questions. Members who walk in unprepared often leave with unresolved questions and no way to get a second appointment before their filing deadline.

What to Prepare Before Your Appointment

The difference between a useful consultation and a rushed one is what you bring in the door.

Pull your Annual Benefits Statement (ABS). Log into MyTRS and print or save your most recent ABS. Know your tier, your Total Service Credit, your FAS, and your unreduced retirement age. If any service credit looks wrong — missing years, uncredited substitute time — note the discrepancies to raise during the meeting.

Review your TDA balance. Check your TDA account value and current investment allocation in MyTRS. Know how much is in the Fixed Return Fund versus the Passport Funds. The counselor can help you think through Deferral Status versus withdrawal, but only if you know what you are starting with.

Draft your payout option questions. If you are married, the payout option discussion is the core of the consultation. Know what the Maximum option pays, what Option 1 and Option 2 would cost in monthly reduction, and whether the Pop-Up options (5-1 or 5-2) interest you. The counselor can provide scenario-specific numbers, but the conversation is much more productive if you have already read the option descriptions and identified which trade-offs you need to discuss with your spouse.

List your open service credit issues. Have you submitted Form SB146 for prior service? Requested a Cost Letter (SB64)? Is a military service claim (SD68) pending? If buybacks are in progress, know their status — the counselor can help you assess whether they will clear before your retirement date.

What the Counselor Covers

A typical consultation walks through:

  1. Confirming your tier, program enrollment (55/25, 55/27, or Basic Plan), and unreduced retirement age
  2. Reviewing your benefit estimate at your target retirement date
  3. Discussing payout option trade-offs based on your specific numbers
  4. Reviewing your TDA balance and distribution options
  5. Flagging any pending service credit issues or MCAF deficits
  6. Confirming the health benefits transition timeline (OLR application, Welfare Fund enrollment)

The counselor does not file any paperwork for you. The actual retirement application, TDA election, and health benefits application are your responsibility to complete through the appropriate channels (MyTRS, OLR, and the UFT Welfare Fund).

What the Consultation Cannot Do

The counselor can help you understand your payout options and the calculations, but the elections are yours. For final terminal leave calculations or per-session earnings certification, contact DOE payroll; OLR handles City health plan enrollment.

For members with complex situations — a pending divorce with DRO implications, substantial TDA balances where tax strategy matters, or multi-employer service credit transfers — a 30-minute session often raises more questions than it answers. Consider supplementing the consultation with your own research before and after the meeting.

Getting More Value From the Meeting

The most effective approach is to do your own homework before the appointment, then use the consultation to validate your understanding and ask about the edge cases.

The NYC TRS Retirement Guide is designed for exactly this purpose: read through the filing sequence, model your payout options, and identify your open questions before you walk into the UFT office. You get more from 30 minutes of expert time when you already understand the basics.
