NYSLRS Pre-Retirement Seminars, Webinars, and Counseling Appointments

NYSLRS members within a year or two of retiring have several free resources for learning how the retirement process works — official Comptroller webinars, one-on-one counseling appointments, and union-sponsored workshops. Each one covers different ground, and none of them replaces the others.

NYSLRS Retiring Soon Webinars

The Office of the State Comptroller runs "Retiring Soon" webinars throughout the year. These are live sessions covering the retirement application process, filing timelines, payout option overviews, and common administrative steps. They are open to all NYSLRS members in both ERS and PFRS.

The webinars provide a solid statutory overview — the 15-to-90-day filing window, how Retirement Online works, what documents you need — but they are not personalized. You will not get answers about your specific tier, your particular FAS calculation, or which payout option makes sense for your situation. Think of them as orientation, not planning.

Check the NYSLRS website for the current schedule and registration. Sessions fill up during peak retirement season (spring, ahead of June 30 retirement dates), so register early if you are planning a mid-year exit.

Individual Counseling Appointments

For personalized guidance, NYSLRS offers one-on-one consultations with benefit counselors. These appointments are where you can review your actual service credit balance, walk through your official benefit estimate, ask about specific scenarios (early retirement reductions, Partial Lump Sum eligibility, the impact of unpaid service credit), and get clear answers about your tier's rules.

You can schedule an appointment through Retirement Online or by calling NYSLRS directly. Consultations are available at the Albany headquarters and at regional consultation sites across New York State. During heavy filing periods, appointment availability tightens — booking three to six months ahead of your intended retirement date is a reasonable lead time.

There are limits to what counselors can do. They can explain how each payout option is calculated and what the monthly numbers would look like for your account. They cannot recommend which option to choose, give tax advice, or address health insurance eligibility — those fall under different jurisdictions (your tax advisor and your employer's Health Benefits Administrator, respectively).

Five questions worth bringing to a counseling appointment:

  1. What is the monthly difference between the Maximum Single Life Allowance and the Pop-Up Joint Allowance for my beneficiary's age?
  2. Do I have any unverified service periods or unpaid service credit balances that would cause a permanent reduction?
  3. How does a Partial Lump Sum election affect my monthly benefit and future COLA adjustments?
  4. Is there a Domestic Relations Order on file that restricts my option election?
  5. What is my exact earliest unreduced retirement date under my tier and plan?

Union Pre-Retirement Workshops

Public employee unions run their own retirement education programs, and these workshops fill a different niche than official NYSLRS sessions.

CSEA (Civil Service Employees Association) offers retirement workshops for state and local government members. These sessions typically cover contract-specific benefits — how your particular bargaining unit's sick leave provisions work, what your negotiated health insurance continuation looks like, and other terms that vary by collective bargaining agreement. CSEA pension specialists can walk members through the paperwork timeline but focus on the union-side benefits your contract guarantees.

PEF (Public Employees Federation) runs similar pre-retirement seminars for its professional, scientific, and technical membership. PEF workshops tend to emphasize the interaction between your professional-grade salary progression and Final Average Salary calculations, along with the specifics of PEF-negotiated sick leave conversion allowances.

Other unions — NYSCOPBA, Council 82, NYSUT (for school district employees) — offer comparable programs. Check your union's member services page for dates and eligibility.

The common thread across all union workshops: they provide strong guidance on contract-specific provisions and general pension overviews, but they do not walk you through a personalized, step-by-step option election workbook. That level of detail requires either a counseling appointment with NYSLRS or independent planning resources.

Putting It All Together

A practical sequence for someone 12 months out from retirement:

  • 12 months out: Attend a Retiring Soon webinar for the statutory overview
  • 9 months out: Attend your union's pre-retirement workshop for contract-specific provisions
  • 6 months out: Book a one-on-one NYSLRS counseling appointment with your five key questions prepared
  • 6 months out (simultaneously): Meet with your employer's Health Benefits Administrator for NYSHIP and sick leave conversion

The NYSLRS Retirement Guide provides the structured planning framework these sessions introduce but do not give you — including payout option comparison worksheets, a filing window calendar, and the sick leave conversion analysis to bring into your counseling appointment with the numbers already worked out.
