STRS Ohio Retirement Eligibility 2026

The 32-Year Rule Is Still Alive Through 2035

At its March 2026 meeting, the State Teachers Retirement Board extended the 32-year service credit standard for an unreduced retirement benefit through May 1, 2035. If you've been tracking the scheduled phase-ins to higher service thresholds, you can stop worrying about them for now.

Under the current rules, Defined Benefit Plan members qualify for an unreduced lifetime benefit through two paths:

  • Any age with 32 years of qualifying service credit
  • Age 65 with 5 years of qualifying service credit

This means a teacher who started at 23 and worked continuously could retire with a full, unreduced pension at 55. No age penalty, no actuarial reduction.

Reduced Retirement: The Earlier Exit

Not everyone wants to wait for 32 years. STRS Ohio offers reduced retirement benefits at lower thresholds:

  • Any age with 27 years of qualifying service credit
  • Age 60 with 5 years of qualifying service credit

The word "reduced" matters. Your monthly benefit takes a permanent actuarial cut based on how far you are from unreduced eligibility. A teacher retiring at 27 years and age 54 faces a larger reduction than one retiring at 27 years and age 59, because the system prices in how many additional years of payments it expects to make.

Grandfathering Protections

Once you meet an eligibility standard — reduced or unreduced — that qualification is locked in permanently under STRS Ohio rules. Even if the board raises thresholds before you actually retire, your eligibility cannot be revoked.

This is a critical point for teachers in the 28-to-31-year range. If the board eventually increases the unreduced threshold above 32 years after 2035, anyone who already reached 32 years of service credit before the change takes effect keeps their unreduced eligibility.

Which Plan Are You In?

Eligibility rules differ by retirement plan tier:

Defined Benefit Plan — The rules above apply directly. This is the plan most career K-12 educators are in.

Combined Plan — The defined benefit portion can be annuitized at age 60, or at age 55 with 32 years of service. The defined contribution portion is accessible at age 50 following employment termination.

Defined Contribution Plan — No service-year formula. Your benefit is your invested account balance, accessible at age 50 following employment termination.

Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP) — Higher education faculty who elected an ARP during their 120-day enrollment window have a separate private vendor account, though they may hold a residual STRS Ohio balance.

The Eligibility Extension Timeline

The board reviews and adjusts retirement parameters annually under the Sustainable Benefit Plan framework. Here's the recent history that matters:

The original post-2015 reform schedule would have gradually increased the unreduced service requirement beyond 32 years. The board has repeatedly extended the 32-year standard — most recently through May 1, 2035. This does not guarantee the standard continues past that date, but the pattern shows the board has been reluctant to raise it while the fund's health allows the current threshold.

Verifying Your Own Eligibility

Log into your STRS Ohio Online Personal Account to pull an official service retirement estimate. The estimate shows your total qualifying service credit, including any combined credit from OPERS or SERS. It also projects your monthly benefit at different retirement dates so you can see exactly what retiring now versus working another year or two means in dollar terms.

If your service credit total is close to a threshold — say 31.5 years — schedule an individual benefits counseling session with an STRS Ohio specialist. They can confirm whether you have any purchasable service credit (military time, restored refunded service, approved leaves) that could push you over the line.

Our STRS Ohio Retirement Guide walks through the full eligibility verification process, including how to read your estimate statement and identify purchasable service credit before your target retirement date.
