STRS Ohio First Retirement Check Timeline
When to Expect Your First Payment
STRS Ohio issues your initial benefit payment on the first banking day of the month following your retirement effective date. If you retire July 1, your first check arrives on the first banking day of August.
But that first check may not be your full pension amount. If your employer hasn't submitted final payroll reports yet, STRS Ohio pays you an estimated "partial payment" until the exact numbers are confirmed.
Why Partial Payments Happen
When you retire at the end of a school year — the most common timing — your district's payroll office needs to submit final reports to STRS Ohio certifying your base earnings, supplemental pay, and last day worked. Employers file these through the Electronic Service System (ESS) within about two weeks of your retirement date, but processing and verification take additional time.
Until STRS Ohio has finalized your account using verified compensation data, they cannot calculate your exact Final Average Salary or your precise monthly benefit. So they issue partial payments based on estimates — typically across three consecutive months.
These partial payments are not reduced penalties. They're preliminary amounts that will be reconciled once STRS Ohio locks in your exact benefit.
The Finalization Process
After your employer submits final payroll data, STRS Ohio audits your account, recalculates your exact FAS, and determines the final monthly benefit amount. If the partial payments were lower than your actual benefit, STRS Ohio disburses a retroactive adjustment covering the difference for every month of partial payment. If the partial payments were slightly high (less common), the overage is deducted from a future check.
You receive a formal finalization notice once this process is complete. After finalization, your monthly benefit is fixed at the calculated amount (subject only to any future COLA adjustments).

The 91-Day PLOP Rule
If you elected a Partial Lump-Sum Option Plan, your lump sum is not paid at retirement. STRS Ohio disburses PLOP funds exactly 91 days after your retirement effective date or 91 days after your account is finalized, whichever comes later.
With a July 1 effective date and a typical three-month finalization period, the 91-day clock may not start until October — putting your PLOP payment in January or later. If you're counting on PLOP funds to pay off a mortgage or make a major purchase at retirement, plan for this delay.
Direct PLOP payouts have 20% federal tax withheld immediately. Direct pretax rollovers transfer to your designated financial institution without withholding.
What Happens to Your Employer Benefits
Your employer-provided health insurance typically ends on the last day of the month you retire or the last day of your contract — check with your district's HR office for the exact termination date. If there's a gap between losing employer coverage and starting STRS Ohio health care coverage, you may need a COBRA bridge.
Your final paycheck from the district (covering your last working days, any accumulated sick leave payouts per contract, and summer salary if on a 12-month pay schedule) follows its own timeline separate from your STRS Ohio benefit payments.
How to Avoid Delays
Submit your Service Retirement Application at least three months before your effective date. File all supporting documents — spousal consent, beneficiary designations, tax withholding elections, health care enrollment — in the same window. The 30-day minimum is a backstop, not a target. Late paperwork is the most common cause of delayed first payments.
Our STRS Ohio Retirement Guide includes a first-payment timeline that maps out when to expect partial payments, when finalization typically occurs, and when your PLOP distribution will arrive based on your specific retirement date.
