How to Apply for NJ Pension Retirement Through MBOS

MBOS Is the Only Path

Every PERS and TPAF service retirement application must be filed electronically through the Member Benefits Online System. Paper applications are no longer accepted for standard service retirements. If you do not have an active MBOS account, set one up well before you plan to file — account registration requires identity verification that can take several days.

When to Submit Your Application

You can file your application up to 12 months before your target retirement effective date. The Division recommends submitting at least 120 days (four months) before the date to allow sufficient time for processing, employer certification, and Board approval.

Filing early does not commit you to retire — you can modify your retirement date, change your payout option, or cancel the application entirely until 30 days after Board approval or 30 days after the effective date, whichever is later. Confirm NJDPB's current instructions for changing a submitted application.

All PERS and TPAF retirements take effect on the first day of a calendar month. You cannot select a mid-month retirement date.

What MBOS Asks You to Complete

The online application walks through several screens in sequence:

Retirement effective date. Select the first-of-month date when you want your retirement to begin. This is the date your pension starts accruing (paid retroactively after Board approval).

Payout option selection. You choose one of the nine pension options — Maximum, Option 1, Options 2-4, or Options A-D. Each screen shows the estimated monthly amount for that option based on your posted salary and service records. Take your time here — this decision becomes permanent after the 30-day modification window.

Beneficiary designation. Name your primary and contingent beneficiaries with their Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and relationship. For joint-and-survivor options (2, 3, 4, A, B, C, D), only one individual beneficiary can be named (except Option 4, which allows multiple). For Options 1 and Maximum, beneficiary rules are more flexible.

Direct deposit enrollment. Pension payments are made exclusively by Electronic Funds Transfer. Enter your bank routing and account numbers during the application.

Tax withholding elections. Select your federal and state withholding preferences. Check NJDPB's instructions for changing withholding after retirement, and review your elections before your first check.

What Happens After You Submit

The moment you submit, MBOS sends an automated notification to your employer's Certifying Officer. Your employer must then complete the Employer Certification for Retirement through the EPIC system — this is where they verify your final salary, last day paid, contract term, and confirm no pending disciplinary action.

This employer step is the most common source of delays. You have no control over how quickly your employer processes the certification, but you can follow up with your HR department to keep it moving.

The PERS or TPAF Board of Trustees reviews and votes on retirement applications at its monthly meeting. After Board approval, the Division processes your first pension payment.

The Retirement Effective Date Rule

Your effective date must be the first of a month, and it must fall after your last day of active employment. For 10-month education employees (teachers retiring at the end of a school year), the typical effective date is July 1 — even if the last instructional day was in June.

You can request a change to your effective date after submitting the application, as long as the 30-day modification window has not closed. If you need to delay retirement (a service purchase is not yet complete, or a QDRO is still in legal review), contact NJDPB for the current process.

Spousal Consent

Spousal consent is required for a non-spouse beneficiary selection. For Maximum or Option 1, confirm the applicable NJDPB consent instructions before filing.

Tracking Progress

Log into MBOS periodically to check your application status. The Retirement Application Status module shows where your application stands — submitted, awaiting employer certification, pending Board review, or approved. If something is stalled, the module identifies what is missing.

The NJ PERS & TPAF Retirement Guide walks through every MBOS screen with step-by-step instructions and flags the common errors that cause processing delays.
