NJ Pension Proof of Age Requirement for PERS and TPAF Retirement

The Division of Pensions and Benefits requires proof of age before it will process your retirement application. This sounds simple until you realize your birth certificate is in a different state, your name has changed since it was issued, or you were born outside the United States and need to confirm which proof it accepts. Starting early on this step prevents it from becoming the bottleneck that delays your Board approval.

Proof-of-Age Documents

A missing proof-of-age item can delay processing. NJDPB materials list a birth certificate or passport as examples. Ask the Division which document format it accepts for your record and how to submit it.

When to Submit

Check with NJDPB whether proof of age is already on file. If the Division needs a document, resolve the request early: missing proof of age can delay processing, and service retirement applications should be submitted at least 120 days before the target date.

Name Changes

If your current legal name doesn't match the name on a proof-of-age document, ask NJDPB what records it accepts to connect the names before submitting anything.

Beneficiary Proof of Age

For a non-spouse beneficiary under Options 2, 4, A, or B, IRS age-difference limits apply. Ask NJDPB what beneficiary information or documents it requires for your selected option.

Missing or Unavailable Records

If you cannot obtain a birth certificate or passport, contact NJDPB to ask what alternate proof it accepts for your case. Do not assume a particular substitute document will be accepted without the Division's confirmation.

Don't wait until you've filed your retirement application to discover you have a documentation problem. Contact NJDPB to check whether proof of age is on file, and if not, ask what document to provide.

The NJ PERS & TPAF Retirement Guide includes a pre-application document checklist covering proof of age, beneficiary information, and every other form required before your MBOS submission.
