NYSLRS First Pension Check Timeline: When Payments Start and What to Expect

When Your First Check Arrives

Your first NYSLRS pension payment is issued at the end of the month following your first full month of retirement. The timeline works like this:

  • Retire on July 1: First payment arrives at the end of August, covering July and August.
  • Retire on July 15: First payment still arrives at the end of August, covering the partial month of July (15th onward) and the full month of August.
  • Retire on August 1: First payment arrives at the end of September, covering August and September.

That means there's always a gap between your last active paycheck and your first pension payment. If you retire on July 1, your final paycheck covers your last period of active employment, and then nothing arrives until late August. Plan for at least one month — sometimes closer to two — with no income from either source.

Estimated Payments vs. Final Payments

Your first several pension checks aren't the final amount. NYSLRS issues initial payments on an estimated basis while conducting a full audit of your records.

The estimated amount is based on the information NYSLRS has at the time you retire: your tier, credited service, and the Final Average Salary data available from employer payroll reports. But your employer's final payroll certification — confirming your exact last day of pay, any outstanding adjustments, and your complete earnings history — takes time to process.

During this audit period, which typically runs 30 to 90 days after your retirement date, your monthly checks reflect NYSLRS's best calculation with incomplete data. The estimate can differ from the final benefit.

What Happens at Finalization

Once NYSLRS completes the audit, it recalculates your benefit to its finalized amount. If that amount differs from the estimated payments, NYSLRS issues a retroactive adjustment to reconcile the difference. Review the final calculation and contact NYSLRS with questions about any change.

The Payment Schedule Going Forward

After your first check, NYSLRS pension payments follow a monthly schedule. Check Retirement Online or NYSLRS's current payment calendar for the payment date.

NYSLRS strongly encourages direct deposit, and most retirees set it up during the application process through Retirement Online. You'll need your bank's routing number and your account number. Your bank's processing can affect when the funds become available, so use NYSLRS's payment calendar for the expected payment date.

If you opt for paper checks instead, allow time for mail delivery; delivery time depends on your location.

Bridging the Income Gap

The gap between your final paycheck and your first pension payment catches many new retirees off guard. A few strategies that help:

Time your retirement date strategically. Retiring on the first of the month rather than mid-month can simplify the timeline and reduce confusion about partial-month calculations.

Set aside one to two months of living expenses in accessible savings before your retirement date. This covers the gap without forcing you to tap retirement accounts or take on debt.

Check whether and when your employer pays out unused vacation. A payout, if available, may bridge part of the gap.

File your retirement application as early in the 90-day window as possible. Earlier filing gives NYSLRS more processing time, which can sometimes accelerate the first estimated payment.

Tax Withholding on Pension Payments

Before your first check arrives, NYSLRS applies the federal tax withholding election you submitted with your retirement application. If you did not submit instructions, the default is “Single with zero adjustments,” which may not match your actual tax situation.

NYSLRS pensions are exempt from New York State and local income taxes. If you move to another state, that state's tax rules apply. Update your withholding through Retirement Online whenever your tax situation changes.

The NYSLRS Retirement Guide includes a cash-flow planner worksheet that maps out the gap between your final paycheck and first pension payment, helping you budget through the transition without surprises.
