CalSTRS Change Beneficiary After Retirement: Pop-Up, Remarriage, and Waiting Periods

You Cannot Freely Swap Beneficiaries

You can request a change to your option election or beneficiary with Form SR1328 within 30 days of your first benefit payment. After that window, the election is locked. If you chose a Modified Benefit — 100%, 75%, or 50% — the named option beneficiary is part of an actuarial calculation. You cannot simply replace one beneficiary with another.

There are two situations to understand after the election is locked.

Scenario 1: Your Beneficiary Dies Before You (Pop-Up)

If your option beneficiary predeceases you, CalSTRS automatically increases your monthly benefit to the full, unreduced Member-Only amount. This is the pop-up provision.

After the pop-up, you can elect to name a new option beneficiary. But naming a new beneficiary requires:

A six-month waiting period. The new designation does not take effect until six months after CalSTRS receives the request. If you die during those six months, the new option election has not taken effect; any one-time death benefit follows your Recipient Designation form (MS0002).

A new actuarial reduction. Your monthly allowance is recalculated with a new actuarial reduction.

Scenario 2: Remarriage After a Spouse Beneficiary Dies

If you named your spouse as your option beneficiary and they die, the pop-up applies. If you later remarry and want to name your new spouse as a beneficiary, the same rules apply — six-month waiting period and actuarial re-reduction.

Remarriage alone does not give the new spouse any automatic right to your CalSTRS pension. The new spouse only receives a continuing benefit if you affirmatively designate them and survive the six-month waiting period.

The One-Time Death Payment Is Different

The Recipient Designation form (MS0002), which controls who receives the one-time lump-sum death payment and DBS/CB balances, can be updated at any time. There is no waiting period for MS0002 changes. File an updated form with CalSTRS whenever your circumstances change — divorce, remarriage, birth of a child.

Note: a divorce or domestic partnership termination automatically revokes a former spouse's designation on the MS0002. If you want a former spouse to remain the recipient after divorce, you must file a new MS0002 after the judgment date.

Plan Ahead

Beneficiary changes after retirement are constrained by design — CalSTRS pension obligations are actuarial commitments, not account balances you can redirect freely. The CalSTRS Survivor Benefits Guide explains the full mechanics of option elections, pop-up provisions, and re-designation rules.
