Alternatives to DRS Retirement Seminar: What to Do If You Can't Attend
DRS offers retirement planning seminars and webinars for members of PERS, TRS, and SERS, but they cover large groups at once and move quickly through topics that affect each person differently. If you walked out of one feeling more confused than when you walked in, or you simply cannot fit one into your schedule, you are not alone.
The good news is that the seminars are not a prerequisite for filing your retirement application. Everything they cover is available through other channels—some of which let you work at your own pace with your specific numbers in front of you.
What the DRS Seminars Actually Cover
The seminars typically walk through:
- How the defined benefit formula works (service credit × AFC × plan multiplier)
- An overview of benefit Options 1 through 4
- The PEBB retiree health insurance transition
- Plan 3 defined contribution account options
- The Deferred Compensation Program (DCP) and 457 rules
- Social Security coordination basics
They do not provide personalized advice on which option to choose, how to invest your Plan 3 balance, or whether early retirement makes financial sense for your household. Those questions are outside DRS counselors' scope.
Your DRS Online Account Access (OAA)
The most underrated tool DRS offers is Online Account Access at drs.wa.gov. Within 12 months of your target retirement date, you can request an official benefit estimate that shows your projected monthly payments under all four options. This is the same data the seminar references—except it uses your actual service credit, AFC, and age.
OAA also lets you:
- Review your full service credit history
- Check for missing months or employers
- See your Plan 3 defined contribution balance (managed through Voya)
- Track the status of your retirement application after filing
Running your own estimate through OAA with your real numbers teaches you more about your specific retirement than a group seminar covering generic examples.
One-on-One DRS Counselor Appointments
DRS retirement counselors can answer specific questions about your account, walk you through your official estimate, and explain how early retirement factors apply to your hire date and service years. They provide factual, administrative information rather than personalized financial advice—they will not tell you which option to pick—but they can clarify the rules that apply to your exact situation.
You can request a counselor appointment through OAA or by calling DRS directly. These appointments cover the same ground as the seminar but tailored to your plan tier, service history, and retirement date.

Union Pre-Retirement Workshops
Public employee unions in Washington—including the Washington Education Association (WEA), Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE), and Public School Employees (PSE)—host their own retirement workshops for members. These are typically smaller, focused on the membership's specific plan tiers, and sometimes include question-and-answer sessions.
Check with your local union chapter for upcoming workshop dates. These are free for union members and often scheduled during the school year for education employees.
Self-Paced Research
Between the official DRS handbooks, the HCA PEBB retiree enrollment guides, and your own benefit estimate, you have all the raw material to prepare for retirement without attending a seminar. The challenge is that these resources are spread across multiple websites, handbooks, and PDFs.
If you want the full picture organized into a chronological sequence—from 12 months out through your first pension check—the Washington DRS Retirement Guide consolidates the DRS application process, benefit option trade-offs, PEBB health insurance deadlines, and Plan 3 distribution mechanics into a single reference you can work through on your own schedule.
